These small dental appliances are placed within a person’s jawbone during invasive surgery. After placement, they will bond naturally with the bone and then an artificial tooth, such as dentures or a dental crown, can be placed.

How do they replace missing teeth?

When people have missing teeth, it is likely that they will want to replace them with something durable and permanent, and dental implants allow for just that. While the process does take time and patience, it is well worth the wait.

During surgery, the dentist will cut a small incision in a person’s gums where the missing tooth is. After the incision is made, the bone will be drilled into in order for the implant to be placed. Because implants are shaped like screws, they can then be secured into place.

After the procedure, a person can opt for a temporary artificial tooth that will be placed until the actual implant fuses with the bone. This usually takes a few months so proper bonding occurs. Once bonding has been complete, dentures or dental crowns will be placed and secured to the implant’s top.

Once the artificial tooth is secure and fitted perfectly, a person has a brand-new artificial tooth that looks and feels just like a natural one. Dental implants are essentially replacement roots that act as the support and structure for each tooth. While they are not natural tooth roots, they are made of titanium, which is biocompatible and hypoallergenic, and the body is very unlikely to reject it.
