A Dental Implant Is a Dental Appliance to Replace Missing Teeth

Having missing teeth can make life difficult for a variety of reasons but with the help of a dental implant, life can become much easier. This dental appliance has become a popular choice for replacing teeth that are missing.

A missing tooth is unappealing to look at and can make chewing difficult, as food may not grind up as well or may be more likely to get stuck in or around the missing space. However, dental implant appliances allow people to get back to an easier day-to-day life. Read on to find out more in this article as we go over how dental implants can replace missing teeth!

Dental implants

What are they?

While dental implants have been around for quite some time now, there are still people who are unfamiliar with them. These small dental appliances are placed within a person’s jawbone during invasive surgery. After placement, they will bond naturally with the bone and then an artificial tooth, such as dentures or a dental crown, can be placed.

How do they replace missing teeth?

When people have missing teeth, it is likely that they will want to replace them with something durable and permanent, and dental implants allow for just that. While the process does take time and patience, it is well worth the wait.

During surgery, the dentist will cut a small incision in a person’s gums where the missing tooth is. After the incision is made, the bone will be drilled into in order for the implant to be placed. Because implants are shaped like screws, they can then be secured into place.

After the procedure, a person can opt for a temporary artificial tooth that will be placed until the actual implant fuses with the bone. This usually takes a few months so proper bonding occurs. Once bonding has been complete, dentures or dental crowns will be placed and secured to the implant’s top.

Once the artificial tooth is secure and fitted perfectly, a person has a brand-new artificial tooth that looks and feels just like a natural one. Dental implants are essentially replacement roots that act as the support and structure for each tooth. While they are not natural tooth roots, they are made of titanium, which is biocompatible and hypoallergenic, and the body is very unlikely to reject it.
