Tooth Extraction and Dental Implants in a Day

dental implants Honolulu, HI

Dental implants can significantly improve a person’s oral health while also replacing a missing tooth. Having both procedures done in one day offers certain benefits, but it is important to be aware of what comes along with those benefits.

If you are experiencing tooth decay, then you may want to think about having an extraction. Asking the dentist or oral surgeon to also place a dental implant afterward may help reduce the discomfort of having a missing tooth. In this article, we discuss what it is like to have a tooth extraction on the same day as dental implant placement.

Tooth extraction and dental implants in one day

Considering having teeth removed and replaced with one day dental implants? Below, we outline what to expect.

The procedure

Tooth extraction typically does not require anything more than the decayed tooth being pulled. Sometimes, there will be light bleeding or swelling that causes a need for anti-inflammatory medication or ice. The patient may experience slight pain post-procedure, which is normal.

When a dental implant is placed during the same visit, the patient should expect a much longer visit. Dental implant placement requires surgery with an anesthetic, meaning the procedure is not as easy as pulling a tooth. A small incision is made in the gums, and the implant is drilled directly into the bone.

Once the dental implant is placed, an artificial tooth will be placed on the head of the dental implant. These artificial teeth range in type, but in general, they are dental crowns, partial dentures or bridges. In the case of one-day dental implants, most dentists recommend that dental crowns should be placed because they allow for immediate functionality, as well as look quite natural.

Discomfort

Tooth extractions induce a fair amount of discomfort, but it typically does not usually last longer than a few hours. Most dentists administer pain management in order to remedy the pain so the patient is not too uncomfortable. However, when dental implants are introduced on the same day, there may be more severe pain.

Dental implants require a semi-invasive oral surgery, which can cause pain. After the tooth is pulled and the implant is placed, the patient may experience swelling, bleeding and additional pain. Because the implant is placed beneath the gums, the pain usually lasts for a few days.

Quicker functionality

One of the main reasons to consider dental implants on the same day as a tooth extraction is that it allows patients to get back to work more quickly than with the traditional implant process. There is also less of a risk of bone deterioration, which can happen when tooth loss occurs.
