If you want strong, healthy teeth, you might want to take a look at both, your diet and your oral hygiene. Gum disease and tooth decay can be preventable if you ensure that your lifestyle is in line with the ideal standards of teeth and gum health.

The four basic components that pave the path for strong, healthy teeth include:
Good oral hygiene
Healthy diet
Regular professional cleaning
Use of fluorides through daily brushing and flossing
According to the American Dental Association, chewing/smoking tobacco, poor oral hygiene, unhealthy diet and intake of a certain medication that keeps calcium from being absorbed are some of the major causes of tooth decay and gum disease.
Good dental hygiene practices must be established to avoid these.
Healthy diet
Healthy diet remains important to keep dental caries and gum diseases at bay. Children and pregnant women must ensure that their diets include sufficient amounts of protein, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin A, C, and D. These nutrients are abundant in foods such as low-fat milk, meat, fish, poultry, fruits, cheese, and vegetables.
A healthy diet also involves ensuring intake of sugary foods in a limit. If you eat a lot of sugar-dense foods, it will lead to building up of bad bacteria in your mouth which in turn will weaken your teeth enamel. Therefore, make sure that you are taking carbohydrates in moderate amounts.
Using fluoride
The tooth enamel easily absorbs fluoride which helps in strengthening the teeth. Fluoride also prevents teeth from acids that cause decay. In some regions, the water supply companies add safe amounts of fluoride in the water to help prevent cavities. The American Academy of pediatric dentistry highly recommends the intake of fluoridated tap water along with using toothpaste, rinses, and gels abundant with topical fluoride.
Brush and floss
Whatever we eat, a sticky film of plaque forms on the top of our tooth enamel. If this layer does not go away immediately, it is likely to move inward and remove calcium from the inner layer of our teeth, thereby causing cavities. The same plaque can even cause gum inflammation.
It is imperative to brush your teeth preferably after every meal to prevent these dental problems from happening. Make sure the toothpaste you are using has fluoride in it and is antimicrobial. For inter-dental cleaning, also floss at least once a day so that no food particles start living between your teeth.
Professional dental cleaning
The plaque caused by carelessness in brushing and flossing may lead to the development of tartar on your teeth which breaks through the protective covering of tooth enamel and enters the inner layer of teeth. At this stage, tartar will damage your teeth bone because it has taken in-depth roots. Professional cleaning by a certified dentist removes this kind of dental caries. It is otherwise also good if you get your teeth professionally cleaned twice per annum.
