3 Signs of an Abscessed Tooth [Toothache]

Having an abscessed tooth, otherwise known as a toothache, can become quite problematic. There may be discomfort or even pain that gets in the way of doing normal day to day things. Toothaches are bothersome and should be addressed by a dentist if they persist.

Toothaches are often a sign of another problem within the mouth, which is why they should never go ignored. It is best to be aware of the signs that indicate an abscessed tooth. In this article, we go over 3 signs to keep an eye out for.

If you’re experiencing discomfort with one of your teeth, then you may find this information to be useful. Read on to find out more!

Three signs of an abscessed tooth or toothache

Toothaches should be taken seriously, especially if they continue on for more than a day. Consulting with a dentist about any of the following signs is a good idea, as they can determine what the problem may be.

1. Pain

The number one sign that indicates a toothache or an abscessed tooth is any sort of pain. When a person experiences pain within a tooth, it is often hard to ignore, as it usually radiates throughout the entire jaw or head. Any throbbing or sharp pains can be medicated with an over-the-counter pain reliever until a dentist appointment can be made.

Pain usually indicates a problem within the tooth, which is known as the pulp. There may be an infection or a problem with the gums. If any pain is occurring, it is best to immediately see a dentist.

2. Swelling

Another sign that may indicate a toothache is swelling around the tooth. If the gums or the entire mouth are swollen, there may be an abscessed tooth. Swelling often indicates a further problem too, such as infection or injury. Swelling can be controlled with ice or cold compress until a dentist can examine the area. Ice may also help to bring down any pain that is also occurring.

3. Bleeding

A lot of times when a person is experiencing an abscessed tooth or toothache, there will be bleeding around the tooth from the gums. Excessive bleeding may indicate that the tooth is experiencing a problem. There may be an infection in the tooth or even within the gums that could be causing the toothache and/or the bleeding. Rinsing with salt water will help clear the blood from the mouth, as well as keeping the mouth clean until a dentist can determine what the issue is.
