3 Common Dental Treatments for Toothache Pain

Toothaches aren’t enjoyable for anyone, and thankfully, dentists have determined a few ways to treat the pain! Modern dentistry has allowed for more effective treatments when it comes to a toothache. Ultimately, it is best to be seen by a dentist who can assess the pain, but it is also helpful to be aware of the most common treatments that are used to treat a toothache.

If you’re experiencing a toothache then it may be helpful to familiarize yourself with the following treatments. These are the most common ways that dentists help relieve toothache pain.

Three common dental treatments for toothaches

Antibiotics

When a person visits their dentist for a toothache, there will likely be an examination to determine where the pain is coming from and why. A lot of the time, it may not be possible to see where the toothache is coming from. Antibiotics are prescribed for a lot of toothaches because it acts as an anti-bacterial medication.

The administration of antibiotics will kill the bacteria that may be causing the infection. If the infection is destroyed, then the pain will likely subdue. It is important to remember that antibiotics won’t work overnight. It takes a few days and doses of the medication to completely destroy the bacteria causing the infection.

Drainage

Another common dental treatment for toothaches is referred to as infection drainage. The dentist drains the tooth that is causing pain so that the infection can be cleared out. Most of the time, the toothache is a result of an interior infection. Draining the tooth completely will help to remove the bacteria from the tooth and clean the area to ensure it remains healthy. During the drainage, the dentist would also perform a thorough cleaning to ensure that the tooth and gum lines are healthy and bacteria-free.

Root canal

One of the most major forms of dental treatment for a toothache is a root canal. When a tooth is abscessed and not hurting from an infection, it is likely due to a crack or decay on the inside. In these scenarios, the only way to treat the pain is through a root canal.

Root canals are only done for severe cases in which the tooth is very damaged. They require a minimally invasive procedure in which the roots are cleaned and cleared out.
